Frontline Flea and Tick Products
Frontline flea preventative is a topical flea control medication for dogs and cats over 8 weeks old. Frontline is available in several different size dosages for different size pets. To apply Frontline on your animal, squeeze all the recommended medication on the skin between the shoulder blades.
Flea preventatives like Frontline are applied between the shoulder blades so that they cannot lick the medicine off. If you have more then one pet, it is important to keep an eye on them for a while after you’ve applied Frontline, to make sure your pets don’t lick the medicine off the other’s back. Remember to wait at least 24 hours before bathing your pet so the flea preventative does not wash off.
To kill fleas in less than 24 hours, use Frontline flea spray which can be sprayed directly into your pet’s coat. Remember to avoid the head area to prevent the product from getting into your pet’s eyes or mouth.
Misuse of Frontline Flea Products
“It’s important for pet owners to read the label and follow the directions carefully,” says Steve Hansen, D.V.M., director of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.
There are potential side effects with the misuse of flea control products comtaining ingredient permethrin, which is commonly found in many insecticides. Concentrated permethrin can be lethal for cats, though most dogs can tolerate it. Do not use products on cats that are labeled only for use on dogs. Avoid using the product on pets that are younger then suggested on the medications label. For kittens and puppies, alternative flea protection methods should be used instead, such as mild soap and water baths, and using a flea comb.
