Remedies for Ear Mites in Dogs

Ear mites are bothersome parasites that live on and under your pet’s skin, causing persistent itching, skin inflammation, and dark-colored discharge in the ears. If your pet has ear mites, follow the steps below to help kill the ear mites and prevent future infestations.

  • Before applying any ear mite medication, you should thoroughly clean your pet’s ears with a product like our 1-800-PetMeds Ear Cleansing Solution.
  • After your pet’s ears are thoroughly clean, apply the desired ear treatment medication to your pet’s ears. Depending on the product’s instructions, you may need to massage the medication into the ear.
  • Allow your pet to shake his or her head after the medication is applied. Massaging the medication into your pet’s ears helps to break up the discharge and it will need to be expelled from the ears.
  • For optimal results, repeat ear mite treatment after seven days (or more frequently depending on the product instructions). Doing this will allow the medication to kill any recently hatched ear mite eggs and prevent new eggs from being laid.
