Does 1-800-PetMeds Require a Prescription (Rx)?

If you or members of your family have ever taken a prescription medication, you are probably familiar with the process of filling a prescription at your local pharmacy. Just as with human medications, some pet medications also require a prescription. Your pet’s veterinarian will evaluate your pet and determine which medication may be necessary for your dog or cat.

Some pet medications are available over the counter (OTC), which means that no prescription is needed. Others are classified by the FDA as prescription only, which means that they cannot be dispensed without an authorization from your veterinarian.

How Does PetMeds® Work?

Ordering from PetMeds® is fast and easy. Simply browse the website to locate the product your pet needs. You can even use the handy PetMeds® mobile app to order when you’re on the go! If you have questions or prefer to speak with someone directly, just give us a call and speak to one of our friendly customer care representatives. Once you’re done shopping, click the “Checkout” button to complete the order by providing your billing, shipping, and payment information.

Does PetMeds® Contact Your Vet?

We will only contact your veterinarian if you are purchasing a prescription medication. If your order consists only of non-prescription products, we’ll ship it right away — usually the very same day.

If you’re ordering prescription (Rx) medications for your pet, we’ll just need you to provide your vet’s name and telephone number, and we’ll take it from there. A member of our pharmacy team will contact your vet to obtain approval for your pet’s medication by telephone or fax. If you prefer, you can always request a written prescription from your vet and send it directly to us instead. Our mailing address is:

PetMeds® 420 S. Congress Ave, Suite 100 Delray Beach, FL 33445

Is It Safe to Buy Pet Medications Online?

Ordering your pet’s medications online is both safe and convenient. We use an industry security standard called SSL, which encrypts the order between your computer and our website and verifies that personal information is not redirected. We also use a state-of-the-art fraud detection system to prevent your credit card from being used fraudulently. You can rest assured that your billing information is safe — our website will never display your credit card number.

Do I Need a Prescription for Flea Prevention Medicine?

It depends on which flea and tick prevention medication you select. Many common topical flea medications do not require a prescription, including:

  • Frontline Plus
  • Advantage II
  • K9 Advantix II

Some of the newer oral flea and tick medications — such as NexGard and Bravecto — are classified as prescription medications. One of the benefits of these oral medications is that they tend to be more effective at keeping your pet flea-free. Your veterinarian can help you decide which flea treatment is best for your dog or cat.

Where Does PetMeds® Ship From?

Your pet’s medications are shipped directly from our state-of-the-art facility located in Delray Beach, Florida.
